Newgrange

Our first stop is at Newgrange, situated at the Bru Na Boinne Centre along the River Boyne in County Meath. Home to Ireland’s renowned passage tomb dating back to before 3,000 BC, this historical site is a captivating destination for all visitors to the island of Ireland. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by a knowledgeable tour guide who will delve into the history of Newgrange and lead you on a tour around the tomb. Inside, you can photograph the magnificent megalithic artwork and the iconic decorated entrance stone.

Learn about the famous winter solstice phenomenon, occurring annually on December 21st, where sunlight penetrates the tomb’s center, illuminating its entirety. Following this, you will visit the impressive great mound at Knowth, another monumental structure of similar scale to Newgrange. This part of the tour typically lasts around 3.5 hours.

Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre

Our next destination is the Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre, which chronicles the story of one of the most significant battles in Irish history. Fought in 1690 between Catholic King James II and Protestant King William of Orange along the River Boyne, this battle shaped not only Ireland’s future but also that of Great Britain and Europe. The impact of this historic event continues to resonate today, with the Loyalist community in Northern Ireland commemorating their victory annually on July 12th.

King James’s defeat led to the decline of the Irish Gaelic Lords, profoundly influencing the entire island of Ireland. The Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre offers a compelling exhibition that beautifully recounts this pivotal chapter in history, providing invaluable insights not to be missed.

Monasterboice

The final destination on this enchanting tour is the medieval monastic settlement of Monasterboice. Dating back to the 5th century, this impressive site features two 14th-century churches, several magnificent Celtic High Crosses, including the towering Muiredach High Cross standing over 18 feet tall, renowned as Ireland’s finest example of a High Cross, and a 10th-century Round Tower soaring over 90 feet high. Monasterboice derives its name from Abbot Muiredach Mac Domhnaill, who passed away in 923 AD.

This site, reminiscent of scenes from movies, offers a unique glimpse into Irish history and is a must-visit for anyone with an interest in the country’s rich cultural heritage.
